When to choose each grade
PP (Polypropylene) — the everyday workhorse. Flexible, resists cracking under repeated bending, and survives being knocked around. Best for T-shirts, blouses, light dresses, and kids’ clothing. It is the cost-effective default for high-volume retail.
PS (Polystyrene) — the crisp budget option. Stiff and glossy, PS gives a clean, sharp look and the lowest price. But it is brittle: drop it or overload it and it cracks. Use it for lightweight, low-turnover displays where looks matter more than abuse.
ABS — the heavy-duty premium. Denser and tougher, ABS holds heavy coats, jackets, and winter wear without bending, and it survives years of reuse. If your hangers must last multiple seasons with premium garments, ABS is usually worth the premium. Note that over-specifying ABS for light garments is wasted money.
PS-MB — the middle ground. Modified PS blends extra impact resistance with PS stiffness, bridging the gap between PP and ABS. A smart choice for medium-weight garments where PP feels too soft and ABS feels too expensive.
Recycled blends — the sustainable option. Recycled content changes mechanical properties depending on blend ratio and source. For stores with sustainability targets, verify the actual blend, recycled content percentage, and certification (post 13). A well-formulated recycled PP can perform close to virgin for light garments; recycled ABS for heavy garments needs careful qualification.
How to verify the material you are actually getting
- Check the spec sheet. The grade, weight, and virgin/recycled status should be written down, not described verbally.
- Weigh the hanger. Weight is a fast proxy for material thickness and density—a PS hanger at the same dimensions as a PP hanger will differ in feel and weight.
- Do the simple flex test. Bend the arm gently. PP flexes and returns; PS snaps or cracks; ABS feels dense and springs back firmly.
- Request material certificates. Resin suppliers provide COA (Certificate of Analysis); for recycled claims, request GRS/RCS certification documents (see post 13 and the existing virgin vs recycled guide).
- Load-test the sample. A 24-hour test at rated load (post 3) tells you more than any datasheet.

- Buying the cheapest grade for heavy garments, then blaming the factory for breakage.
- Buying premium ABS for T-shirts, paying 2–3x for strength you never use.
- Assuming all “recycled” material is equal—blend and quality vary wildly.
