The Retailer’s Hanger Fit Guide for Clothing Brands

Fashion retailers selecting clothing

The wrong hanger is the fastest way to ruin a garment—and the easiest way to lose a sale.** A dress shirt on a too-wide hanger gets shoulder bumps. A silk blouse on a smooth hanger slides to the floor. Trousers folded over a bar develop a permanent crease. Fit is not a detail; it is the difference between a garment that sells and one that gets marked down.

The three rules of hanger fit

  1. Shoulder width should match the garment’s shoulder seam (see the 1cm rule in our existing post 5). Too narrow = stretch marks at the shoulder; too wide = bumps and deformed seams.
  2. The hanger must hold the rated weight without bending. A hanger rated for T-shirts cannot carry coats.
  3. The hanger must prevent slipping for the specific fabric—smooth silk needs grip; heavy knitwear needs support, not grip alone.

Sizing: getting the width right

Adult hangers commonly range from about 38 cm to 50 cm; kids’ hangers from 22 cm to 36 cm. As a rule:

  • Match hanger width to the garment’s shoulder seam width, not to the chest size.
  • Most adult shirts and blouses fit a 40–42 cm hanger.
  • Heavy outerwear needs 45–50 cm with a thicker arm profile.
  • When in doubt, order a size run sample set and test on your actual garments before bulk (post 3).

Specialty features to know

  • Notches: for strappy dresses and tops; keeps thin straps anchored.
  • Clips: for trousers and skirts; look for rubber or padded clips to avoid marks.
  • Trouser bars: let pants hang full-length, avoiding creases.
  • Flocked/velvet surface: non-slip grip for slippery fabrics, premium look.
  • 360° swivel hooks: speed up hanging and turning garments; also a branding touchpoint.
  • Reinforced hooks: for heavy garments and high-handling environments.

Matching hangers to store zones

  • Front-of-store / hero wall: premium finish—flocked, soft-touch, or custom color (post 10 and existing post 7).
  • High-density sales floor: slim, standard hangers that maximize rail capacity.
  • Stockroom / warehouse: durable, lowest-cost hangers that still protect garments.
  • Clearance zone: standard neutral hangers that do not add perceived cheapness.

FAQ

Q: What is the most common hanger size for adult clothing? A: 40–42 cm covers most adult shirts, blouses, and light dresses. Adjust up for coats (45–50 cm) and down for kids.

Q: Should I use one hanger type for the whole store? A: Consistency matters for display, but garment safety matters more. Use a small, standardized set of types (slim, notched, clip, heavy-duty) and apply them by garment zone.

Q: How do I stop silk blouses from slipping? A: Use flocked, velvet, or soft-touch hangers. The surface friction holds slippery fabrics without damage.
